I was featured on Good Mom/Bad Mom. Jenny listed my blog entry about my son peeing in my trash can. Too cute! Thank you Bloggess!
Of course I know Oscar De La Hoya is famous, but I had no idea he's like movie star famous! I actually thought that he was going to come to this VIP reception tonight and that he would mix and mingle and talk to people. Not so! He was shuffled in with security, HPD, and around the room with people pressing up and trying to meet him, get his autograph, and picture.
Rey won a copy of his book, but in Spanish, so he asked him to sign it, which he did. Later we went over to the book signing at Barnes & Noble and we were able to get in line first to have our English edition signed, since we were also invited to the reception. That was pretty cool.
Thank you Tony Diaz and Nuestra Palabra! It was a lot of fun and a nice outing for me and husband. We had some yummy Mexican food over at Doneraki and some delicious margaritas.
I have a lot more to tell y'all but it's getting late. I have to tell you all about my recipe that will be featured in an upcoming book, "Bodega Party in a Box," published by Neighbor's Project. I'll blog all about it soon!
P.S. By the way, I wasn't domestic at all yesterday. I didn't do any of the domestic things I had planned except keeping the living area- living room, dining room and kitchen presentable. OH! and I did cook dinner like I had planned.
Come on in and read the reflections of a middle-aged Hispanic American writer & working-mom. I'm passionate about writing, reading, Little Libraries in Laundromats, the historic McDaniel Street Cemetery & art (especially collaging) & corporate philanthropy. I hope to inspire people with my words, especially women, to show them that we all have challenges & struggles, in different ways. Neighbors Project Article
Check out this interview about my belief in the Magnet/Vanguard program in the Houston Independent School District.
How exciting! Although I wish I had a better picture than this one. I look old!! And this picture was taken around 4 years ago! I think I'm pregnant with my son in that picture.

Neighbors Project Blog
Remember that website that's linked back to a couple of my blog entries? Well the editor "interviewed" me on something that I feel really strongly about, public education. The feature on my "project" will publish this week some time. Pretty cool!
Living in Houston, and being an inner city dweller at that, can be challenging for some parents. Some may opt for a private school education for their kids. I am a firm believer in the Magnet program within HISD and especially the Vanguard program.
I already have to start working on my little one. Just this morning I had to get off at my daughter's school to drop off her after school program payment. (they have extended day) When we were walking up to the school I started telling my son that he too can go to the same school if he works with me on his ABCs and numbers. I told him that that's why it's so important for him to learn the phonics song with me. He was listening to what I said too. I just have to keep reminding him, without too much pressure.
I have a year to prepare him for the Vanguard test. He'll have to take it next year for Kinder in the Fall '09. If he doesn't make it we'll have to have a back up plan at a Magnet school nearby.

The Latest
I was quoted again on the neighbor's project blog. Very cool!
I drove out to the Med Center area today and I was amazed at how many big apartment buildings are up around there. A few years ago there was nothing there along 288. There are so many cool old houses in that area. I hope they don't tear down any of them to rebuild those big apartment homes.
I can't believe school is out in two days! The kids will both be with the sitter starting on Friday. I'll be on vacation at the end of next week and most of the following week.
I MIGHT (I'm still saying might until it's official) have some out patient surgery on Friday, the 28th. More on that later.
